E9 Tuning Overview
The E9 tuning is the most common pedal steel tuning, optimized for country, western swing, and pop music:
| String | Note | Pitch |
| 1 | F# | High |
| 2 | D# | |
| 3 | G# | |
| 4 | E | |
| 5 | B | |
| 6 | G# | |
| 7 | F# | |
| 8 | E | |
| 9 | D | |
| 10 | B | Low |
The three foot pedals modify string pitches when engaged:
| Pedal | Name | Effect |
| A | A Pedal | Raises strings 5 & 10 (B→C#) |
| B | B Pedal | Raises strings 3 & 6 (G#→A) |
| C | C Pedal | Raises strings 4 & 5 (E→F#, B→C#) |
Common Pedal Combinations:
- A+B - Creates major chord variations, essential for country playing
- B+C - Used for specific chord voicings and transitions
Knee Levers
Four knee levers provide additional pitch control:
| Lever | Name | Location | Effect |
| LKL | Left Knee Left | Inside left knee | Lowers specific strings |
| LKR | Left Knee Right | Outside left knee | Raises/lowers strings |
| RKL | Right Knee Left | Inside right knee | Common pitch bends |
| RKR | Right Knee Right | Outside right knee | Additional variations |
Using Pedal Steel Controls
- Select Pedal Steel from the instrument dropdown
- The control panel appears below the fretboard
- Click pedal buttons (A, B, C) to engage/disengage
- Click knee lever buttons (LKL, LKR, RKL, RKR) to activate
- Watch the Effect Display - Shows which strings change and by how much
- Use Preset Combinations - Quick buttons for common setups
Effect Display Panel
When pedals or levers are engaged, the effect display shows:
- String number being modified
- Original note before the change
- Arrow indicating pitch direction (↑ up, ↓ down)
- New note after the change
Example: S5: B ↑ C# means String 5 raises from B to C#
Learning Mode for Pedal Steel
In Learning Mode, pedal steel works uniquely:
- Notes - Shows all positions, updating when you change pedals
- Chords - Displays bar positions showing chord tones at specific frets
- Triads - All triad positions update in real-time with pedal changes
- Scales - Scale patterns adapt to current pedal/lever configuration
Bar Position Markers: On pedal steel, note markers appear directly ON the fret wire (not between frets) to represent where you'd place the bar.
Test Mode for Pedal Steel
Quiz games on pedal steel include pedal/lever challenges:
Beginner: No pedal changes - just learn the base E9 tuning
Intermediate: Questions include pedal combinations:
- A+B for major chord variations
- Single pedals (A, C) for specific voicings
Advanced: Full complexity with:
- Multiple pedal combinations
